The CIBC Advantage Debit Card™

Use this debit card for all your day-to-day banking and to securely pay for purchases directly from your CIBC bank account. With this debit card, you can shop in Canada as you always have with INTERAC Debit. Plus, with this card you can shop at stores in the U.S. and internationally where Visa is accepted as well as online, over the phone or by mail at participating retailers that accept Visa Debit.

Worldwide Purchase Acceptance

The Advantage Debit Card is not a credit card; it's a DEBIT card, which means that you can pay for purchases worldwide using your own money withdrawn directly from your CIBC bank account.

How to use your CIBC Advantage Debit Card

The CIBC Advantage Debit Card is accepted at all Canadian stores where INTERAC Debit is accepted. When paying for a purchase with your CIBC Advantage Debit Card, tell the cashier that you are paying by DEBIT. If needed, refer the cashier to the INTERAC logo on the card. The card works like any other Canadian INTERAC debit card. As Canadian stores become more familiar with Visa Debit, you will find more cashiers automatically recognize the card as a debit card.

Tip: If a cashier tells you that your card has been declined, check to make sure they processed the purchase as DEBIT.

The CIBC Advantage Debit Card is accepted at stores in the U.S. (using the Visa and Interlink networks) and around the world where Visa cards1 are accepted.

Follow these simple steps when shopping with your CIBC Advantage Debit Card in person at stores outside Canada (U.S. and around the world)2:

  1. Tell the cashier that you are paying by Visa. This means that the cashier will process the transaction through the global Visa Network. Even though this may seem like a credit card transaction, rest assured, it is still a debit transaction and money will be withdrawn directly from your account.
  2. INSERT OR SWIPE: Where the retailer's terminal is chip-enabled, your debit card will be inserted into the terminal, chip end first, and left there for the duration of the transaction. Until chip technology is widespread, not all retailers will have chip-enabled terminals. Those that are not equipped with these terminals will require you to swipe your card.
  3. Sign and/or enter your PIN to authorize the transaction.

The CIBC Advantage Debit Card is accepted by most U.S. and international online, telephone and mail order retailers that accept Visa1 cards. Just select "Visa" or "Visa Debit" as the card type and/or "Credit" as the payment method and follow the prompts to provide your card details.

Currently, CIBC Advantage Debit Card acceptance in Canada for online, telephone and mail order purchases is limited to participating retailers and this list continues to grow.

Follow these simple steps when shopping with your CIBC Advantage Debit Card online, by phone or by mail:

  1. CHOOSE VISA OR VISA DEBIT as the card type.
  2. PROVIDE YOUR CARD NUMBER AND EXPIRY DATE located on the front of your CIBC Advantage Debit Card.
  3. As an additional security measure, some online retailers may require the three-digit security code on the back of your card.
IMPORTANT: The three-digit security code is NOT your PIN. Never disclose your PIN to anyone.
  4. At times, you may be asked for the cardholder name as shown on the front of the card.
TIP: If your card does not have a name on the front, use your legal first and last name.
  5. PROVIDE YOUR BILLING ADDRESS and other information as required.
  6. OBTAIN PAYMENT CONFIRMATION.

Important: When you use your CIBC Advantage Debit Card to conduct Advance Payment transactions, including reserving goods and/or services such as hotel reservations or car rentals, funds for payment of that transaction may be debited immediately from your account by the merchant. You are, in effect, making an advance payment for a service to be used in the future, so the funds will be debited from your account at the time you make the reservation. Because the amount you pay to book the reservation upfront or at check-in (i.e. a deposit) may be different from the final purchase amount, you may wish to make the reservation with a credit card until you know what the final payment amount will be, at which time you may use your CIBC Advantage Debit Card to pay for the transaction directly from your account.

Protect your PIN

We encourage you to select or change your PIN to something known only to you and that's easy for you to remember. For added security, change your PIN from time to time.

How do I change my PIN?

1 Visa Debit transactions are any transactions which can be done online/by phone/by mail at participating retailers or at stores in the U.S. and internationally wherever Visa is accepted.

2 If you use your CIBC Advantage Debit Card to purchase goods and/or services outside of Canada, a converted Canadian dollar amount will be debited from your account, based on the same conversion rate CIBC is required to pay, plus an administration fee of 2.5%of the converted amount. This is in addition to any transaction fees applicable to the debit purchase. The conversion rate applied to purchase refunds and other credits may be different from the conversion rate applied to the original purchase. The administration fee will also apply to purchase refunds and credits.

3 The Visa Zero Liability Policy does not apply to ABM transactions or to PIN transactions not processed through the Visa network. You must comply with the CIBC Cardholder Banking Service Agreement including safeguarding your card, your card details and PIN.
