Treating our small business owners like family
“The CIBC team went above and beyond, and to me, you don’t get that level service and commitment anywhere today.” — Ed Vaes, business owner

4-minute read
Growing up, my stepdad worked at a lumber yard and opened a wood shop. I started helping him when I was around 11 years old. That’s when I got a feel for the business. After graduating from high school, I took a job at a steel mill, but I quickly realized it wasn’t for me.
I began my own woodworking business in the early 90s in Stoney Creek, Ontario, and thanks to its success, I have been able to launch others, including Supply-All Trim and Doors, a retail business specializing in trim, moldings, interior doors and hardware, and Lakeshore Landing Marina in Gravenhurst, Ontario. It’s a hub for cottagers with gas, boat services and year-round cottage rentals.
In all my businesses, what stands out to my customers is our focus on service. It's that same customer focus that brought me to CIBC.
I’ve been with CIBC for more than a decade on the personal side, but I switched to another bank to help finance my businesses. When one of my business mortgages was up for renewal, I decided to give CIBC a try.
That's when my long-time personal banking advisors introduced me to CIBC Relationship Manager Alessandra. The first thing I noticed was Alessandra's energy. Instead of sitting behind her desk, she stood up, shook my hand and told me that even if she didn’t have all the answers, she’d give me her all. That stood out to me. It felt genuine. Having that personal connection is so important these days. She made me feel at ease right away and we bonded over our families.
“In our first meeting, Ed told me he runs his business like a family and wants to take care of his employees,” recalls Alessandra. “I can relate to that because I treat my clients like family, too. With Ed, it didn’t take long for him to feel like part of my extended family. I'll call him from my personal cell number and say I'm coming over. That’s how close we’ve become.”
I came to CIBC wanting all of my businesses to be under one bank. Alessandra quickly brought together the right resources, pulling in a solid team of business banking and credit partners to support me and my ambitions. They worked together with Alessandra to get the deal done seamlessly.
Alessandra believes in the power of teamwork, honesty and responsiveness when working with clients. ”What matters most is being candid. If I don’t have the information needed right away, I let my clients know to give me a day or two to connect them to the right person.”
My mortgage renewal deal had a tight timeline, and honestly, there was a moment during the mortgage approval process when I nearly called it quits because the paperwork was so overwhelming. But I stuck with it because of the incredible team at CIBC. They went above and beyond for me. You don’t find that level of commitment anywhere else. In the end, I wanted everything under one roof. I moved two of my businesses to CIBC and I’m planning to move my third business there soon.
Alessandra and the CIBC Business Banking team also set me up with a business account and credit card. To help streamline my payable and receivable needs, we’re also in the process of arranging payroll services with CIBC SmartBanking for Business.
CIBC has been a fantastic partner, securing funding and bringing most of my ventures under one roof. Alessandra took the time to get to know me. She genuinely cared about my goals and her support exceeded my expectations. I’m so grateful for the amazing team at CIBC. They provided everything I needed.
