Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs and policies are becoming commonplace across organizations as both leadership teams and employees recognize the importance of being in an inclusive environment. As the “Great Resignation” demonstrated in 2021, employees are taking greater control of their careers by being more selective about the type of workplace they want to belong to, among other factors.
Hasina Juma and Carmella Wallace are seasoned professionals in the DEI space. In May 2022, they co-founded and launched Eagle Vision Legacy Group Inc. (EVLG) Opens in a new window.. They observe, “We are currently seeing the emergence of a new business model that is people-centric. Wellbeing is being placed front and center due to the impacts of the global pandemic. As a result, both individuals and organizations are re-thinking the purpose of the office due to hybrid work models and employees are advocating for better treatment for themselves and their communities.”
Underlying these waves of changes, Juma and Wallace explain that employees are “looking for working communities that are authentic and inclusive, where they can bring their whole selves to work and play in the creativity of the organization. Where their talents and diversity are truly valued.”
This type of inclusivity is beneficial to the employee, as well as the operation and efficacy of an organization.
As described on EVLG, Juma has “40 years of intersectional personal lived experience — 2SLGBTQ+, first generation Canadian, person of colour, formerly part of the Ismaili sect within the religion of Islam and has East African/South Asian family roots — which gives her an unbelievable edge and a perspective of a being a minority, within a minority, within a minority.”
Meanwhile, EVLG highlights that Wallace is able to draw wisdom from “her intersectional lens and lived experiences — Métis, 2SLGBTQ+, Catholic/Jewish, trauma thriver, mother of child with autism.” From a professional perspective, Wallace shares that she “brings 30 years of business and 12 years of psychology experience together and they nicely complement each other in the area of DEI by offering a variety of perspectives about psychological safety, core needs, behavior, motivation, values, and neurodiversity.”
Juma’s and Wallace’s combined personal and professional experiences have given rise to EVLG, a holistic DEI consulting firm that is seeking to create change within organizations by way of the 6- to 18-month holistic team journey Brave Hearted Leadership Program, situational consulting, team workshops and speaking engagements.
