Responsible procurement

Our Environmentally Responsible Procurement Standard describes our requirements for the procurement of goods and services that may be associated with significant adverse environmental impacts. We’re committed to working with suppliers who share our level of concern for the environment and who provide a safe and respectful workplace for their employees, as supported by our CIBC Supplier Code of Conduct.

Through our supplier questionnaire, where applicable, we gather and review the following information from our suppliers:

  • Environmental management systems;
  • Environmental initiatives and performance pertaining to their environmental aspects;
  • Environmental violations;
  • Product stewardship;
  • Forestry practices; and
  • Third-party certifications.

As applicable, when considering a potential supplier, environmental criteria are evaluated as part of the request for proposal (RFP) and the request for information (RFI) process.  Post selection of suppliers, we continue to monitor suppliers’ environmental performance as part of our overall supplier management process, including completion of our Environmentally Responsible Procurement Questionnaire for Suppliers at a minimum of once every two years.

Our employees and the environment

We actively communicate our Corporate Environmental Policy (PDF, 95 KB)  Opens in a new window. and program initiatives to our employees. We strive to educate, train and motivate our employees to conduct activities in an environmentally responsible manner.

Our employees support numerous activities throughout the year focused on making a positive impact on our environment and the community. Some examples of these activities include CIBC Environment Day, Earth Hour™, Earth Day®, Waste Reduction Week and FSC® Friday.

Every year, our team members and their families show their support for CIBC Environment Day by participating in one of the largest direct action conservation programs in Canada — the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup Opens in a new window.. In 2019, approximately 400 CIBC team members and their families from across the country removed an incredible 2,200 kilograms of garbage from 25 sites, which spanned close to 60 kilometers of Canadian shoreline.
