How to get your health card in each Canadian province

One of the first things to prioritize as a newcomer is obtaining your health card, which gives you access to public healthcare services in Canada. Each province and territory manages its own health insurance plan, so the process and eligibility will vary depending on where you settle. Find your province below to know what steps you’ll have to follow.

In Ontario, newcomers must apply for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). You need to provide proof of residency, identity and immigration status. Note that there’s typically a 3-month waiting period for coverage to begin. During this time, consider private insurance to cover any medical needs. You can apply at a Service Ontario location.

In British Columbia, the Medical Services Plan (MSP) provides health coverage. You can apply online through the BC Services Card website or in person at an ICBC driver licensing office. The waiting period here is three months, so plan for private insurance in the meantime.

Newcomers in Alberta can apply for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) immediately upon arrival, with no waiting period. You’ll need documents such as proof of residency, immigration status and identification. Applications can be submitted in person at a registry office or by mail.

In Quebec, healthcare is managed by the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). A three-month waiting period applies here. You’ll need to provide documentation showing your residency, identity and immigration status. You can apply online, by mail or in person at a RAMQ office.

For residents in Nova Scotia, the Medical Services Insurance (MSI) program is the health insurance plan. To register, you need proof of identity, residency and immigration status. Nova Scotia also enforces a 3-month waiting period. Visit the provincial government website for online applications or apply by mail.

The Manitoba Health, Seniors, and Active Living Insurance Plan (MHSIP) doesn’t have a waiting period for newcomers, so coverage begins as soon as you arrive. Bring your proof of immigration status, identity and residency to a Manitoba Health office to register.

In Saskatchewan, the provincial health plan starts covering you immediately. You can register for Saskatchewan Health by submitting documents proving residency, identity and immigration status. Applications are done online or at local offices.

In provinces like New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and the territories, you’ll find similar application processes for health coverage. Most have a waiting period, so planning ahead with private insurance is advisable.
