Is my embedded credit card travel insurance sufficient?

Let’s say you have travel insurance through one of the CIBC credit cards listed in this chart². Your card’s travel insurance benefits may include emergency medical coverage for a certain number of days. If you plan to travel for longer than the number of days covered by your card’s insurance, you may want to consider purchasing additional travel insurance. This will help ensure you are protected for your entire trip, as travelling without adequate coverage could leave you responsible for out-of-pocket medical expenses. Some CIBC credit cards offer trip cancellation coverage up to $1,500 per person, with a maximum of $5,000 for your family. If the total cost of your trip exceeds the amount of coverage included with your card, you could lose some of your prepaid, non-refundable deposits if you need to cancel your trip.

To help protect your pre-paid travel expenses, confirm whether these costs are refundable, and review whether your credit card’s trip cancellation coverage limit is sufficient to cover the full amount of your prepaid trip costs.
