Jerry Fong
CIBC’s Technology Graduate Rotation Program within Capital Markets

Jerry Fong embraced challenges for a career change. A member of CIBC’s Technology Graduate Rotation Program at Capital Markets, Fong works primarily with Risk Management as a Business Analyst supporting risk applications.

His career journey is far from ordinary. After studying business in university, he moved into the technology field, learning the applications and technical skills associated with it. Fong became proficient in macro-writing and identifying creative workarounds. He leveraged his new knowledge to find another passion. “I’m now able to make a difference,” Fong says. “I learned the importance of striving to make things more efficient. It gave me management perspective and allowed me to think about effectively leveraging resources in the best possible way.”

Whether he’s coordinating initiatives on key projects, collaborating with partners or constantly evolving and learning, Fong thrives on solving new problems and challenges every day—a key factor that played a pivotal role in choosing CIBC.  “CIBC is unique because I’ve been allowed to work on multiple teams and get cross-functional experience,” he adds. “CIBC values employees, and my manager was very supportive. He helped me find my placement and put me in a full-time position.”

Looking ahead, Fong has a clear message for young people looking for the next big step in their career. “For co-ops, really make the most of each opportunity,” he says. “Regardless of what your responsibilities are, go the extra mile. Lay out your goals, your plans and how you want to achieve them. There should be a reason behind every decision you make.”
