Our history
CIBC's history spans over 140 years and is full of adventure and enterprise. Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) was formed when The Canadian Bank of Commerce (established 1867) and the Imperial Bank of Canada (established 1875) merged on June 1, 1961. This was the largest merger of two chartered banks in the history of Canada.
Through our two business lines, CIBC Retail Markets and CIBC World Markets, we provide a full range of products and services to almost 11 million individual and small business clients, and meet the financial needs of corporate and institutional clients.
Today, CIBC operates in North America and around the world and has more than 37,000 employees.
CIBC and diversity
CIBC has a long history of supporting employee diversity. Through our diversity and employment equity initiatives, we regularly promote the celebration of differences among all employees.
In 1993, CIBC was the first Canadian corporation to dedicate an entire month to the celebration of employee diversity - and we continue to do it every year during the month of June. CIBC Diversity Month is now widely regarded as a leading example of corporate commitment to the recognition and promotion of individual differences.
