Preparing to Move

Moving to a new home is as exciting as it is exhausting. While you are multi-tasking to finalize the details of your new home, it is easy to overlook the important things. Use the general checklist below to help you plan ahead and get organized leading up to your moving date.

Preparing to move checklist:
  • Change your address with Canada Post

  • Arrange dates to cancel utilities (water, electricity, natural gas, etc.) and services (phone, cable, subscriptions, etc.) at your current home

  • Arrange start dates for utilities and services at your new home

  • Notify any retained billing companies (credit cards, car insurance, etc.) of your change of address

  • Notify family and friends of your new address and phone number

  • Contact your insurance broker to apply for home insurance

  • Transfer your bank accounts to a close, convenient branch location

  • Clean your current home - sell or give away unwanted items

  • Hire movers or rent a truck to do it yourself

  • Pack items you don't use well ahead of the move

  • Pack a box of "everyday items" that you want to have on hand
