Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CANFAR)

CIBC has made a 3-year commitment in support of CANFAR's national Have a Heart program, which encourages youth leadership skills, while increasing awareness of HIV/AIDS and the need for a cure.

Students at participating schools send Heart o'Grams to each other on Valentine's Day for a minimum donation of $1. Through this program, 405 schools and 250,000 students participated across the country in 2002, raising $75,000 for the cause.

The school with the most "heart" - the one that raises the most money - receives the annual Heart Award.

The 2002 Heart Award went to Stella Maris Academy in Trepassey, Newfoundland.

Stella Maris students have participated in the program since it went national in 1996, and have sold out of their Heart o'Grams every year since.

"It was a very good experience for everyone. Students come away feeling that they have done something good to contribute to AIDS awareness and prevention," says the school's principal, Sister Sandy Butler.

"The program presents another way for young people to learn about the disease, so they can pass the right information on to their families and the people in their communities," she adds.
