  1. How secure is CIBC Online Banking?

Please be assured that CIBC will not undertake to provide a service that compromises the security and confidentiality of customer information. However, with many malicious spyware programs spreading on the Internet, it is important for you to safeguard your information as well.

CIBC Online Banking uses the latest security measures, including encryption technology and firewalls. When you do your banking online, your connection is routed through a firewall that inhibits unauthorized access. Movement through the Online Banking application is also tracked for irregular activity.

CIBC uses 128-bit session encryption. Encryption is a way of scrambling information sent between 2 computers. It is like a digital key that locks all the information being transmitted, making it impossible to decode without the key. There are millions of possible "passwords", or combinations of 128 bits and the combination changes with every connection, this is why it is called session encryption.

Maintaining the security of Online Banking is also the responsibility of users. If you participate in Internet file sharing or if you download music or software, you are at higher risk for viruses, adware and spyware. These applications can capture information from your browser - including passwords, or redirect you to fraudulent websites. For your security, you can install up-to-date Virus Scan software on your computer and run it. You can also obtain a Spyware removal software program.

For example: 011-800-872-2422-1. From all other countries outside Canada and the U.S., call 902-420-2422. Assistance is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 3. What can I do to protect my security?

Never share, disclose, or provide your Convenience Card number or password to another party or website other than CIBC, and know that CIBC will never send you an e-mail requesting this information. Never save your Convenience Card number or password on a publicly accessed computer.

    In addition, consider the following:

    • Install a personal firewall
    • Avoid file-sharing sites to prevent unauthorized access to your computer and its data
    • Keep your browsers up-to-date with current versions and security enhancements
    • Avoid clicking on unknown links or going to unfamiliar websites. Although a link may appear to be taking you to a reputable website, it may be directing you to a fraudulent site
    • Use "strong" passwords - combinations of letters and numbers - that are difficult to guess
