2005 Award Recipients & Nominees
CIBC Commercial Banking is proud to partner with the recipients and nominees of the 2005 CIBC "Spirit of Leadership" Community Award program:
$20,000 Recipient - Minto Developments Inc. for their Minto Foundation - 50th Anniversary Celebration
Minto Developments Inc., a privately owned integrated real estate development, construction and management company with operations in Ottawa, Toronto and South Florida received the first-prize $20,000 CIBC "Spirit of Leadership" Community Award recognizing their incredible 50th anniversary donation program.
To celebrate the company's golden anniversary, Minto developed an incredible yearlong program of giving in order to share their corporate success with the communities in which they operate. In Ottawa, locally based charities were invited to apply online for one of 50 grants of $5,000, which were distributed over the course of 50 weeks in 2005. In Toronto and Florida, Minto employees submitted their favourite charities to be considered for special golden anniversary donations totaling $400,000. Their 50th anniversary donation programs were in addition to the Minto Foundation's on-going community giving, and were a remarkable way to mark their important business milestone.
CIBC Commercial Banking is proud to celebrate and recognize Minto and award them with the first-prize $20,000 CIBC "Spirit of Leadership" Community Award donation. Minto Developments has chosen to direct $10,000 to the Ottawa Children's Treatment Centre Foundation and $10,000 to the Autism Society of Ontario - Ottawa Chapter.

$10,000 Recipient - Aliant for their Aliant Pioneer Volunteers
Aliant, Atlantic Canada's leading telecommunications and IT provider serving more than 2 million consumers and over 80,000 enterprise customers across Atlantic Canada, received the $10,000 CIBC "Spirit of Leadership" Community Award recognizing their Aliant Pioneer Volunteers.
Aliant takes great pride in their commitment to the community and through their Aliant Pioneer Volunteer program employees, retirees and their families generously donate their time to numerous causes, charitable activities and community events throughout Atlantic Canada, lending their energetic and innovative volunteers at a moments notice. In turn, Aliant recognizes and celebrates their employees' ongoing remarkable accomplishments.
With a total membership exceeding 8,300, Aliant Pioneer Volunteers are the largest corporate-based volunteer organization in Atlantic Canada.
CIBC Commercial Banking is proud to celebrate and recognize Aliant and their Aliant Pioneer Volunteers with a $10,000 CIBC "Spirit of Leadership" Community Award donation. The Aliant Pioneer Volunteers plan to direct the donation towards their "I Like Me" youth literacy & self-awareness program being introduced to Atlantic schools this year.

$5,000 Recipient - The Clark Companies
The Clark Companies, a family-owned group of businesses involved in agricultural production and supplies based in Haldimand, Ontario, received a $5,000 CIBC "Spirit of Leadership" Community Award recognizing their community spirit and corporate giving programs, most notably through their Donations Committee and the Ron & Nancy Clark Foundation. As one of the largest employers in a rural community of approximately 10,000 people, The Clark Companies have taken a leadership role and are giving back to the community in which they do business. Clark Companies' employees have led and supported grassroots projects to beautify and restore local historic landmarks, and have been key in the creation of a twin-pad arena and library complex. The Clark Companies leverage their products and services by sharing resources with families close to home as well as with communities in other parts of the developing world.

$5,000 Recipient - The Keg Steakhouse & Bar for their annual Chairman's Award program
Established in 1971, this winning concept has grown and evolved throughout Canada and into the U.S., to include more than 90 locations. At the heart of The Keg is the quality of their employees. They take great pride in the training and mentoring of employees and have built an environment in which their employees can grow and succeed.
In 2001, The Keg Spirit Foundation was launched to expand The Keg's fundraising activities and support programs that directly benefit the development of children and youth. In particular, their goal is to recognize organizations that mirror the mentorship that The Keg has provided to so many young employees over the years. One of the Foundation's projects is the annual Chairman's Award program that recognizes Keg staff who demonstrate a high level of commitment and volunteerism to their community. The winners each year are recognized with a $5,000 donation to the charity of their choice. This program has identified some amazing Keg staff members and has supported many charities that these employees are involved with in their local communities.

The Keg is planning to direct the donation to their 2006 Chairman's Award program, and will be doing presentations to this year's winners at their annual conference.

$5,000 Recipient - Makivik for their Arctic Clean-Up Mission
Makivik Corporation is the representative of the Inuit of Northern Quebec; a not-for-profit organization created in 1978 to manage the investment of heritage funds. With a mandate to relieve poverty, promote education and assist in the preservation and advancement of Inuit culture, Makivik has set out to create subsidiary companies to initiate opportunities for growth of economic development in Nunavik, Quebec.
Launched in January 2005, Cruise North Expeditions is a passenger expedition ship; operating tourist cruises in Nunavik and south Baffin region. The young Inuit employed aboard the ship act as local naturalists and guides to Inuit culture. At the close of their inaugural season, Cruise North launched an exciting project to clean up the fragile northern environment - the Arctic Clean-up Mission. Leveraging the capabilities and facilities of the ship, as well as the skills and manpower of the crew, Cruise North recruited 50 corporately-sponsored volunteers to help the crew on a weeklong mission to clean up abandoned waste sites.
CIBC Commercial Banking is proud to celebrate and recognize Makivik's innovative approach to improving the community in which they do business with a $5,000 CIBC "Spirit of Leadership" Community Award donation.
Makivik is planning to direct the donation to their 2006 Arctic Clean-Up Mission to purchase or rent equipment and supplies.

$5,000 Recipient - National Leasing
National Leasing, a privately held equipment finance company headquartered in Winnipeg, received a $5,000 CIBC "Spirit of Leadership" Community Award recognizing the dedication and organization of their senior leadership team to corporate giving and its contagious effects on their employees. In the past 4 years, National Leasing has increased employee support in their internal United Way campaign by almost 200%, with employee participation maintained at 100% for the past 7 years. National Leasing has loaned a full-time employee to the United Way and matches staff donations to the campaign dollar for dollar.
National Leasing's giving initiatives are not limited to the United Way, or to a single week; employees are encouraged to include volunteer commitments in their personal development plans and their internal webpage has dedicated space for employees to post requests for contributions to their personal fundraising activities.
